| I figured we needed a thread to describe how to kill the bosses in Dark Souls. After dying two or three times I usually look up a strategy for them, so it might as well be here. The only two (major bosses) I have fought so far: 1) Asylum Demon. Starting area. - Spoiler:
I just sprinted away from his attacks and used the black fire bombs I chose as a starting gift. Ded. Got the Demon's Great Hammer.
Alternatively, if you don't choose the firebombs, and are otherwise a gimpy lil melee character at the start, you CAN take the Asylum Demon down the first time you see him, but you will be there for a while. I have not done it yet, but will gurantee it can be done, just patience/time need to be on your side. Took me about 30 min to get him down to 25% health, so I would estimate a 40 min. investment. Really simple, but since it takes so long, it is extra frustrating when you flub.
Strat is pretty basic, "Slash the taint". 3 Basic swings and his flying butt drop move, but he can chain the swings occasionally to really tweak with you. You need to be behind him most if not all of the time, and watch for what direction he is going to swing. When he starts his swing (if it is left or right, forward don't worry) you need to run/walk or roll away from it, but also into his rear. It's tricky, but he will push you a little and you wont get too far away this way. You can get in about 3 hits before he readies another swing or starts to fly
2) Taurus Demon. Undead Burg. - Spoiler:
I used one jumping attack from on top of the tower after killing the two ghouls up there, then ran away and used more black fire bombs. Ded. I got the Demon's Great Axe.
3) Dark Knight and Armored Boar. Undead Parish. - Spoiler:
Both of these guys can be killed in the same spot using the same method...though I only used it on the Dark Knight. He's at the top of the spiral staircase right as you enter Undead Parish. Before you do this, you'll want to kill the Armored Boar and all of the other enemies around the boar.
Get the Dark Knight to follow you down the stairs, run out to where the boar was and up the stairs on the right. Go to the bridge where the two crossbowmen were standing....make sure the Dark Knight's still following you. Jump down and run behind a flaming pile. I believe there are two. Lock on to the Knight and keep your shield up (he'll probably never hit you...but better safe than sorry). As long as the fire is between you and the Knight, he'll keep running into the fire and kill himself. Easy peasy.
4) Gargoyles (aka, Maneater 2.0). Undead Parish. - Spoiler:
These guys aren't so tough. It helps if you can summon someone else to take some of the focus off of you. Attack quickly and try to take out the first gargoyle before the second joins the fight. Keep your shield up and be wary of the fire breathing. The first one has an axe tail. If you cut this off, you get a special weapon drop...and don't have to deal with the axe tail anymore! The second one is more of the same, though he seems to breathe fire more frequently. Keep your shield up.
5) Capra Demon. Basement of Undead Burg (the door to the right when you're facing the Dragon on the bridge). - Spoiler:
This guy is a joke. Unfortunately he's in a closet of a room and has two poison dogs with him. Make sure your equip burden is half or less than your max burden. You will need a shield. Immediately after going through the fog, run straight at him. Yell something like, "SPARTA!!!" or "TWATERMELON!" Right before you're about to run into him, hit . Hopefully you'll jump past him. Immediately run up the stairs on the left. Go all the way up and to the right. Hit R3 and kill the dogs...hopefully they followed you. That's the trick. Kill the dogs first. After that, just be wary of Goat Fuhker's attacks. You can either stay on the ground and melee it out, or run up the stairs into that right corner...he'll follow then jump at you and fall right below you. You can fall attack him. But you'll be slow getting up and he'll probably hit you. Rinse, repeat. If you need to use a flask, run up the stairs, into the corner, and drink it there.
6) Giant Sewer Rat (mini-boss). The Depths. - Spoiler:
Making your way down through the depths, you'll come to an area behind an iron fence in the sewers. You'll see a giant rat. If you've got a ranged attack you can be cheap like me and kill him from 100% safety. Alternatively, after you kill the first butcher you see, there's a hole behind his slaughter table. Fall down it and hit R1. You should hit the rat. Then just attack him as you normally would.
7) Gaping Dragon. The Depths. - Spoiler:
He's slow...but huge. Wait for him to fly up in the air and come down. Make your way behind him and chop off his tail. Sweet new axe!!! Also, he can no longer hit you with it. Make sure your equip weight is half or less of your total available equip burden. If you have to, take off some armor. You're not going to be using a shield. It will take a while, but try to get behind him and hack at his legs. When he goes in the air...run away. When he throws himself forward and buries his teeth in the ground, run up and beat up on him until he gets back up. Towards the end of the battle he throws up all over the ground, run away from it. Hack off this guys tail for a special weapon drop.
8 ) Quelaag. Quelaag's Lair (at the bottom of Blighttown on the other side of the swamp). - Spoiler:
This is the boss battle right before you're able to ring the second bell. At her front, you're subjected to a swiping blade attack and a spit lava pool...at her back, she craps a lava pool and sometimes does an AoE fiery blast attack. I suggest summoning at least one other player for this fight. If nothing else, her focus will be split between the two of you. Three people is better. While she's focused on something in front of her, run up behind her, lock on, and start meleeing her rear. I would do 3 to 4 hits and then roll away. If you keep on for too long, she'll do her AoE fiery blast move. It ain't purdy. Keep on like this, rolling out of her way...to the sides if she's coming for you, and keep your shield up if you're in front of her and she's close so that you can block her sword attack. There are no limbs to hack away for a special drop.
9) Ceaseless Discharge. Demon's Ruins (down the stairs from the second bell). - Spoiler:
This guy looks scary, but there's a cheap gimmick to beating him. The first time you meet him, run past him...he will not be aggresive yet, and grab the drop on the altar- amazing light armor! As soon as you pick it up, he will attack...and he will kill you. When you revive at the bonfire, make your way through the boss fog and slowly walk towards him. When he sees you, start sprinting up the stairs and take a right into that small pathway. He probably won't even hit you. Now, stand at the head of that passageway until he sees you. He'll wind up and throw a tentacle down the passageway. Roll behind the rock wall before he unleashes. As soon as it hits, sprint back to the head of the passageway, lock on, and melee his tentacle as many times as you can. Rinse, repeat. That's it.
10) Moonlight Butterfly. Darkroot Garden? Basin? Forest? (I can't remember) - Spoiler:
This cheeky monkey makes you wait for it. As a melee character, I could do absolutely nothing while he was in the air. Dodge his attacks with either your shield or roll mechanic. It's not too tough to avoid these...though you will take a few. Eventually he'll alight on the bridge for some stupid reason. Run up, hit to two-hand, and go to town. When he starts to take off...RUN! He has a powerful AoE attack when he leaves the bridge. Rinse, repeat. Not too tough if you can survive his aerial assault.
11) The Great Grey Wolf Sif. Darkroot Forest. - Spoiler:
This is my favorite boss in the game, so far. He looks awesome...but we've got to put him down! He has a sword attack. He'll doing a sweeping attack in a circle, and sometimes come back around the other way. He'll also sometimes do a jumping attack with the sword. The latter will eat your endurance with your shield up. I actually leveled my endurance up to 25 for this fight. With that, your shield will be able to absorb most (if not all) of his attacks, and you can always retreat to swig some Estus if needed. The way to attack him is to roll under him, lock on, and go to town. If you're directly under him, none of his attacks can harm you. He'll eventually launch himself backwards and come at you again. You can roll under his sweeping attack to get back. Summoning others helps...because pyromancers love fighting this guy. Having some dudes light him up will help.
12) Scaleless Dragon. Valley of the Drakes. - Spoiler:
Sigh. He takes more than the one arrow it takes to kill the Red Drake, but he dies by arrows...without moving/attacking. I ran up to him from the tower entrance in New Londo (those who took the Master Key can open this immediately. The rest of us have to find the key in the shortcut in Blighttown above the waterwheel). Stand a bit away from him and kill him with arrows. I think it took me over 150...but I always have about 300 arrows on me. A nice unique sword and shield up here plus a Proud Knight Soul (or something like it).
13) Pinwheel. Catacombs. - Spoiler:
This fight made me angry. After making your way through this grueling level, this guy is like fighting Caillou. He's a joke. You don't need a strategy. He'll throw out two dopplegangers that don't take damage, so just find the right one, two hand your sword (if you want to turn a 3 minute fight into a one minute fight) and go to town. He barely does any damage to you...so there's really nothing to worry about. You do get a sweet mask that significantly ups your equip burden.
14) Iron Golem (aka Tower Knight v2.0). Sen's Fortress. - Spoiler:
First, this guy can fall off the bridge and die...which is a good thing. This happened when I fought him (but not when I helped two other folks fight him). He's big, he's mean, he's an axe-wielding battle machine. Get in close. Lock on and just start nailing him. His main attack of swiping his axe from side to side will not hit you if you're tangled up in his legs. His other two attacks can, but he has a pretty long wind up for them. One is to reach his hand in the air then come down and grab you...he throws you against the ground. The other is like a two year old throwing a tantrum- he stamps his feet trying to squish you. As long as you took care of the two fire boulder giants before this fight, you'll be fine.
15) Ornstein & Smough (aka Laurel and Hardy). Anor Londo. - Spoiler:
This fight is hard. Probably because there are two powerful dudes trying to kill you at one time. The strategy here is to summon two other players. It will still be hard. You have to kill one of them first. When you do, any damage you've done to the other will go away and he'll now have a full health bar...so only focus on one of them. Whichever of the two you kill, the other will absorb their fallen comrade's energy. I suggest killing Ornstein first...he's faster, then take out Smough. Fire does ridiculous damage to these guys.
16) Seath the Scaleless. Duke's Archive. - Spoiler:
You will die and lose all of your souls your first encounter with him...it's part of the story, so don't have a ton of souls going into this battle. When you see him again, you can kill him dead. Run behind him to a tall, white crystalline tower thing. Break it. Now you can do damage to him. Go to the front of him...but not too close. Once he starts to do his curse breath, run directly underneath him and start beating on him. When the crystals break, run back and repeat. You're basically trying to get him to do his breath attack where you were...not where you're going to be. Towards the middle of the fight he'll do a curse AoE attack. When you hear his wind up, run as far away as you can and put your shield up. That's it. Not too difficult.
You can also chop his tail off for a rare weapon.
17) Nito. Tomb of Giants. - Spoiler:
First off, Tomb of Giants blows goats. For real. I strongly recommend that you rescue the cleric in Darkroot Garden trapped in the yellow golem behind the Hydra. You'll need to have killed the Hydra first. You'll be able to buy the Cast Light miracle from her.
Nito's not fun. Summon two people. Many respawning skeletons will attack you during this fight. Don't worry about them...except to mainly stay away from them (they really don't do that much damage). Nito's AoE attacks will kill them. Run in close, start whacking him, wait for his AoE attack (you'll see lots of white glowing lights begin to appear), hold up your shield, and back away. I think it's a toxic attack...I never got inflicted with it, so I'm not sure. He's also susceptible to fire. If the skeletons begin to overwhelm you, go back around the other way to get Nito.
18) Priscilla. The Painted World of Ariamis. - Spoiler:
This boss is easy. Keep your shield up, and take her out. I did have some help with some folks I summoned...so it may be more difficult to solo. Cut off her tail for a rare weapon.

You mean the door at the foot of the bridge where the dragon is? I think I found it further on into Undead Parish... It's called the "Basement Key."

| I got it, but it's not that nice. Too bling looking, and heavy as frak.
like i said with the armored Boar, like everything in Undeadburg, fire is the enemy. You'll see two fire pikes in the area, and if you can lure him into one, it'll do 1/3-1/2 damage.
I also used them to lure other enemies down the stairs.
Be care if you've opened the gate BTW. One of the enemies that re-spawns will make a dash for it and close it if you return to the area. You'll want to sprint to him, avoiding the others and the archers, and back stab the SOB before he does. Another fun thing I found out is you can then use the gate to kill any unsuspecting spear knights that mosey on over.

| I haven't been getting many drops from enemies. But I got a few critical hit/back stabs last night and got some drops. I was wondering if your chance of a drop is better after a back stab. | |

| My strat for "Tainted Ed" AKA Asylum Demon - Spoiler:

That's the one. And like Tyrant said, the more Humanity you have consumed, the higher the drop rate. I believe 10 Humanity is the upper limit of affecting drop rate, though I think you can consume more than 10... I've read that you should wait to kill Dark Knights until you're in Human form with a relatively high Humanity. They apparently drop lots of good stuff. I've killed three of them while Hollow...

| I'd love to see some Tower Knight strategies as well.
I beat the first one in Undead Burg easy enough just straight up block and swinging... but the one in the Armored Pig's tower was eating me for lunch. Kek and Toad told me to use the pyres in that area to make him burn himself up and that worked like a charm.
I also tried a few times to take the one on when I went back to the Asylum and he wrecked me. It wasn't pretty.

| Alpha, if you're a melee character with decent endurance, it's best to lock on, stay close and try to circle back for the backstab. Or...if there's a large area, just let them take a swing while you roll away, then run back in for a quick hit. It's slow going, but that's how I beat the first one in Undead Burg. | |

| Gotcha. I think I need to up the stat that will make my guy roll faster. Dex? He's heavily armored and rolls so slow that by the time I stand back up the enemy is facing me directly again. When I am just going from place to place I put the black leather armor on just so I can run faster. | |

| I've got my Vitality, Endurance, and Strength at 25. My Dexterity is somewhere around 20 (+/- a few SL). I thought I was going to be a melee/miracle wielder, but now that I'm rocking my Magic Scimitar...I've started putting some levels in Intelligence. My Soul Arrow is weaksauce, but I'll get there.
Endurance is a must for the melee build. Being able to absorb more hits with your shield is invaluable.
